DRYER MAKING A THUMPING NOISE?

If you’re hearing a loud, repetitive thumping noise emanating from your dryer, don’t ignore it! The sound may seem harmless at first, but it could be a sign of an underlying issue that requires attention. In this blog, we’ll explore some common reasons why your dryer might be making a thumping noise and provide practical solutions to address each problem.

  1. Worn or Damaged Drum Rollers

One of the primary causes of a thumping noise in a dryer is worn or damaged drum rollers. Drum rollers are small wheels that support the dryer drum as it rotates. Over time, these rollers can wear out due to regular use, causing them to become misshapen or develop flat spots. This unevenness leads to an audible thumping sound when the dryer drum rotates.

Solution: Replace the worn drum rollers with new ones. Seek professional help if you’re unsure about the process.

  1. Defective Drum Support Roller Axles

In addition to the drum rollers themselves, the roller axles can also be a source of noise. If the axles are bent or damaged, they can cause the rollers to wobble, resulting in a rhythmic thumping sound.

Solution: Inspect the roller axles for any signs of damage or misalignment. If you notice any issues, replace the axles and accompanying rollers as a set.

  1. Worn Drum Belt

A worn or stretched drum belt can lead to improper drum rotation, causing the dryer to generate a thumping noise. As the belt wears out, it may slip or lose tension, leading to an irregular drum movement.

Solution: Examine the drum belt for signs of wear, cracks, or looseness. If you spot any issues, replace the belt promptly with a compatible replacement.

  1. Loose or Damaged Blower Wheel

The blower wheel is responsible for circulating air inside the dryer. If it becomes loose or damaged, it can produce a loud thumping noise as it hits the housing or other components during operation.

Solution: Carefully inspect the blower wheel for any damage or looseness. Tighten any loose screws, and if the wheel is damaged, replace it with the correct replacement part.

  1. Foreign Objects in the Drum

Sometimes, the thumping noise may not be caused by a mechanical fault at all. It’s possible that small objects, such as coins, buttons, or loose items left in pockets, have made their way into the drum. These items can bounce around inside the dryer, resulting in a thumping sound.

Solution: Turn off the dryer and check the drum thoroughly for any foreign objects. Remove any items you find to eliminate the noise.

A thumping noise in your dryer can be annoying, but it’s also a signal that something isn’t quite right.
